Set of three
Fountain, 6x10', Digital Photography. 2010
Objective: The objective for this assignment was to create a set of three photographs and work well together, hence the idea of a set.
The inspiration for this assignment came from my sister's wedding. She was getting married at the old Rockefeller Farm in New York, and there was this great little fountain on the property. I fell in love with it immediately and started snapping pictures.
The process for creating these images was pretty much just take pictures at first. The main thing that i wanted to do was get a main focal point, with the rest of the image blurred. For this I had to create a narrow depth of field, which required a low F-stop. through taking the pictures, I found that I was not particularly happy with the coloration, so I switched the white balance to florescent mode. This mode tints the image a blue-ish color. That little switch of the white balance made the images sing far more than they had before. After taking the images, I did minimal editing in Adobe Photoshop. Editing consisted of adjusting the levels of darks and lights, and also toning down the saturation of the blue (believe it or not, they were MUCH bluer in the beginning).
This project made me realize that simple playing around with the process can dramatically enhance the work you are creating. I could have easily come up with some decent photographs without changing the white balance, but through that small change, magic happened! These are the kinds of happy accidents that we all hope for in art. These photos also brought to complete realization that less is more in photography. Photographs have no business being filled with information and imagery, instead the less you have in the frame, the more elegant and powerful the image tends to be. Choose a focus, and eliminate the rest.
