Abstraction Of Vegetable Form
24x24 Pen and ink; 24x24 Acrylic on Canvas Baord; 24x24 Acrylic on Canvas Board; Tomato, 2008
Objective: The objective for this project was to first choose a fruit or vegetable form that would be the subject for your abstract study. From there we created an abstract composition of the subject, a tomato in my case. After completing the first composition, we then had to create two different color studies using the initial drawing as a template.
The inspiration for the abstraction was a tomato. I thought that there were so many interesting parts to the tomato that would lend themselves to an interesting abstraction.
The process for creating this project involved a lot of sketching and ideation. I started by examining the tomato and breaking it down into different shapes, both inside and out, and creating small sketches of each part. From there I used tracing paper to combine numerous sketches in a larger composition. I did not settle on the first layout, it took several attempts to get one that I was completely happy with. From there I transferred the image onto a larger piece of paper and used pen and ink to render the forms.
The next step in the assignment was the color studies. In preparation for this I looked at various analogous, complementary, and split complementary color schemes. I then chose several that I found to be appealing and created some small scale color in which I tried both different colors and arrangements of those colors. From there I chose the two that I favored, transferred those onto the canvas board and rendered them using acrylic paint.
Through this I learned the virtue of patience. I have taken my time and planned out projects before, however this one took the cake in time and preparation. In the end, the hours of ideation paid off in the final pieces.
