Objective: The objective for this painting was simply to use analytical cubism to render an object.
The inspiration for this piece was Picasso's analytical cubism work. The idea was to create a conceptual depiction of an object instead of a perceptual one. This got the ideas generating.
The process for making this piece was to find an object, more specifically I wanted a mundane, often overlooked object; a stereo. From there I started painting right away. I thought that diving right into this particular painting would lend more to the raw feeling of a lot of the analytical cubism paintings. I also chose a fairly dull color pallet to further mimic the feel of analytic work. Through the painting process I was using numerous different views of the stereo right on top of, around, and in some cases merged with each other. Through the painting process had the balance of the composition in mind, adding lights or darks, different shapes or colors where they were needed in order to keep the piece balanced and appealing.
The analytical cubism piece gave me a completely different way of thinking about painting. I would have never thought to break an object down into different views and jumble them together, so to speak. I also found the process much more freeing and relaxing than trying to render something realistically.
